To achieve optimal benefit, one to two treatments may be necessary, about three to four weeks apart. Patients may return to normal activities after treatment.
Patients should avoid sun, exposure to tanning beds, sunless tanning lotions, and tanning creams before, during and after treatment. A broad-spectrum sunblock (UVA/UVB) SPF 30 or greater should be applied to the treatment area before any sun exposure. Before receiving laser treatment, patients with a history of herpes or cold sores should receive appropriate treatment. Just prior to laser treatment, remove all makeup, lotions, deodorants and oil from the treatment area with mild soap and water.
Following treatment, apply an aloe-based gel or equivalent to sooth and moisturize the skin. Avoid sun exposure throughout the course of treatment, and use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunblock, SPF 30 or greater, when the treatment area is exposed to the sun. Treated lesions will likely crust, then slough off over the course of several days or weeks. Patients should not scratch or pick at crusts.
